Salford

The Catholic Church, dedicated to St. Marie, is a neat stonei building in the Gothic style of architecture, with an octagonal tower. This sacred edifice which has been erected at a cost of £4,006, possesses an excellent organ built in 1853, by Kirtland and Jardine of Manchester. Rev. James Board man, canon of the diocese of Salford, is pastor.

AspuLb is a populous manufacturing township in this parish, though in the hundred of Salford, 2 miles N.E. from Wigan. It It contained in 1841,2,272, and in 1851, 3,286 souls. Anciently the Gerards held a manorial court in* Aspull, but the manor was sold by William Gerrard, Esq., to one of the Earls of Balcarres, and now belongs to the manor of Haigh. 

“In the early period of the commonwealth (1649), Clitheroe castle was dismantled by order of Parliament; the chapel has totally disappeared, and nothing now remains of the ancient edifice but the square keep, and some portions of the strong wall by which the whole was surrounded. Within the precincts of the castle, a handsome castellated house has been built, as the residence of the steward of the honor, who administers the affairs of one of the largest royalties in the kingdom, extending over the whole of the Hundred of Blackburn, part of the Hundred of Salford, and the liberty of Bowland, and the manor of Slaidburn, in Yorkshire.
